The Reason for Our Suffering

Hey guys! Happy Monday! I hope you all had a great weekend! I spent mine at a weekend retreat, and it was amazing!! I’ll post some pictures at the end from the weekend! God moved in big ways and it was pretty amazing to see!

Today I will be sharing on something that we all experience, but few want to talk about- hurt, pain and suffering. We’ve all been hurt before- maybe from a person, or a situation. No matter how we have been hurt, I think we all can agree that being hurt stinks & can be so confusing and discouraging.

Although being in a season of hurt can be such a discouragement, as followers of Christ there is a light in the darkness that we face, and that’s Jesus.

There was a time in my life that seemed so dark, and it seemed as though God forgot about me & didn’t care I was hurting so much. Life was a bit rough- I was dealing with my first breakup (it was a pretty ugly one too), I was getting sick constantly and was always in and out of different tests and doctor appointments. My dad became sick, and it was very hard for him to walk around and function in the cold. School was also rough for me, and I remember sitting in the back of my biology class crying, being completely overwhelmed with life.

In this time, it felt like I was at the bottom of a deep ocean, with no way of escaping. It wasn’t until after this season that I realized how God’s light shown through throughout this time of hurt and struggle. A verse that reminded me that this hurt is a part of God’s plan for me and that He is in control is Jeremiah 29:11-

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not harm you; plans to give you hope and a future.”

It can seem like God isn’t there and doesn’t care when we are hurting. We may ask ourselves why such a good and amazing God lets such terrible things happen to us? Well friends- it is all apart of His plan for us. He knows what you are going through and every situation that you face is being weaved together to make a beautiful story. I am a firm believer that God gives us situations to test our faith & I am positive that is the reason why I went through what I did my sophomore year.

I believe that it is important to praise Jesus in everything. In the good times and bad, God deserves our praise because we didn’t deserve His death.

Romans is one of my favorite books in the bible, and it beautifully paints this picture of how God deserves all glory through our sufferings.

“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us” Romans 5: 3-5

These verses also depict how God has a plan for our suffering. Our suffering leads to perseverance, character & hope- which strengthens our faith.

I’m not sure about y’all, but there is something so special about the comfort that Jesus gives us. We serve a God that loves us recklessly- and not the careless reckless, but the kind of reckless love that doesn’t care what’s going to happen if it reaches you. It doesn’t consider the suffering it might go through or the pain it might feel. All it cares about is you.

As followers of Christ, we can find such refuge in the love of God. No matter how far we have strayed away from Him, what we have done, what we think, and even what we say, God’s love will recklessly be evident through the midst of it all. And for this reason my friends- we can PRAISE God for the situations He puts us through, for this brings us closer to Him and His comfort.

1 Corinthians 1: 3-5 says this:

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

God comforts us through our pain. We cannot find anything on this earth that compares to the love and comfort that Jesus has for us.

Not only does God comfort us, but He cares about us. He loves us so much that He sent His one and only Son to die for us! To take our place! There is no one on this earth that will care for you more than Jesus does. Matthew 10:30-31 says:

“And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

God cares about us so much that he knows exactly how many hairs are on your head and He knows exactly His plan for your life.

God also hears us. He hears our prayers and our hearts, He knows exactly what we are thinking and asking of Him. 1 John 5: 14-15 explains our confidence in Christ.

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him.”

“This is our confidence, You’ve never failed me yet” Comment down below the title of the song with these lyrics in it!! (PS it’s one of my favorites!)

I am also a very firm believer in using what I have experienced and gone through to help others. Whether it be a class, trip, or situation, I know God puts me in situations for bigger purposes than my own.

God placed someone in my life in the same situation as me to help me through troubled times, and that is my best friend, Jona. As I mentioned earlier, I went through many health trials in this season of life. I had a real hard time being able to eat and not immediately get sick after. I was so confused why I was so sick and why God was letting me suffer like that. Jona is allergic to gluten, and she told me I had the same symptoms as her and to maybe give up gluten to see if it helps. She showed me the tips and tricks into being gluten-free, and she has no idea how much she really helped me through that situation. It is so nice to have someone so close to you understand what you are going through, and I mean come on, you really can’t beat being best friends with the same allergies. (:

Through this season of hurt, Jesus was by my side through it all. And y’all (side note) what an AMAZING thing it is to see prayer answered!

My digestive issues began about 15 months prior to this season of life. I remember praying that God would let my doctors figure out what in the world is wrong with me so we can start to find treatments to try. I went through more than a year of suffering and constantly being sick before I finally had a diagnosis! Through these months of pain, my faith was for sure tested. But, God revealed to me that He was still there right by my side through it all.

Just to wrap things up, I just wanted to summarize this real quick!

  • God KNOWS what you are going through (Jeremiah 29:11)
  • God CARES about you-and He is in control (Matthew 10: 30-31)
  • God COMFORTS you- we can find ultimate comfort in His reckless love! (1 Corinthians 1: 3-4)
  • God HEARS you- He hears your prayers and has a beautiful plan for your life! (1 John 5:14-15)

God remains faithful through every cry and every praise. He is almighty, in control, and loves you more than you could ever imagine.

Alright guys, thank you for checking this out! I hope you have a blessed week, talk to y’all soon!
